The calories in an Elf Bar come from two ingredients: propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerine (VG). PG contains approximately 4 calories per millilitre, and VG slightly more at around 4.2 calories per millilitre. The other ingredients in an Elf Bar (nicotine and food-grade flavourings) are present in such tiny quantities that they contribute virtually no calories at all.

In a standard UK Elf Bar with 2ml of e-liquid, this works out to between 8 and 10 calories per full bar, depending on the PG/VG ratio of the specific flavour. Most Elf Bar disposables and pod kits use a 50/50 PG/VG ratio, which lands the total in the middle of that range. Higher-VG formulations (more vapour, less throat hit) sit closer to 10 calories. Higher-PG formulations sit closer to 8.

The bigger question is whether you actually absorb those calories when you inhale rather than swallow. The honest answer is that we do not know definitively. Most existing research on PG and VG calorie absorption comes from food science, not vape inhalation. Some researchers suggest absorption through the lungs is minimal compared with ingestion. Either way, the absolute calorie count is so small it falls below any threshold that would affect weight or daily intake.

Why the calories barely matter in practice

A typical UK daily recommended calorie intake is 2000 for women and 2500 for men. An entire Elf Bar at 10 calories is therefore around 0.4-0.5% of a daily intake. You burn roughly 50 calories an hour just sleeping, so the calories in a full Elf Bar are burned off in around 10-12 minutes of normal seated activity. By comparison, a 330ml can of Coca-Cola contains 139 calories, more than 14 Elf Bars worth. A single biscuit can be 80-150 calories.

Calorie content of bigger devices and refillable kits

For pod kits that hold more e-liquid, the calorie content scales linearly. A 10ml refill bottle of nic salt at 50/50 PG/VG sits at around 40-42 calories total. Per puff, that works out to roughly 0.008 calories, an amount well below any meaningful measurement threshold.

Does vaping cause weight gain?

There is no consistent evidence that vaping itself causes weight gain through calorie intake. The calories in vape juice are too few. However, two indirect factors can affect weight when switching from smoking to vaping. First, nicotine is a mild appetite suppressant, so if you reduce nicotine intake, appetite may increase slightly. Second, taste and smell often improve after quitting smoking, which can lead to enjoying food more. Neither effect is caused by Elf Bar calories themselves.
