A prefilled pod system is a vape kit that combines a rechargeable battery device with sealed prefilled pods that contain the e-liquid and coil as a single sealed unit. When the e-liquid in a pod runs out, you remove the empty pod and click in a fresh prefilled one. The device body itself stays with you indefinitely, recharged via USB-C between use.

This design is the direct successor to single-use disposable vapes, which were banned from sale across the UK on 1 June 2025 under the Tobacco and Vapes Act regulations. Disposables were one-piece sealed units that combined a non-removable battery with a non-removable e-liquid reservoir, and the entire device was discarded once either ran out. Prefilled pod systems keep the convenience of the disposable experience (no bottles, no coil changes, no fiddling) but separate the reusable parts from the replaceable parts, making the format fully UK-compliant.

Every TPD-compliant UK prefilled pod system follows the same basic specification: 2ml maximum pod capacity, 20mg/ml maximum nicotine salt strength, USB-C rechargeable battery, draw-activated firing, MHRA notification. Brands like Elf Bar, Lost Mary, SKE Crystal, IVG and Hayati all make prefilled pod kits to this specification, with different capacities, designs and flavour profiles.

The three main parts of a prefilled pod system

Part 1: The device body. Contains the rechargeable battery (typically 400-1000mAh), the inhale sensor and the LED indicator. Charges via USB-C. Reused indefinitely. Part 2: The prefilled pod. A small sealed unit containing 2ml of TPD-compliant e-liquid, a mesh coil and a cotton wick. Designed for single use until the e-liquid runs out, then replaced as a complete unit. Part 3 (some kits): The refill container. Higher-capacity kits like the Lost Mary BM6000 add a separate 10ml refill container that auto-fills the internal pod, giving 12ml total system capacity. The refill container is replaced separately from the pod itself.

How a prefilled pod system works in practice

When you take a draw, the inhale sensor detects airflow and powers up the coil in the pod. The coil heats the cotton wick saturated with e-liquid, producing vapour. The vapour travels through the mouthpiece and into your lungs. No buttons, no settings. The battery recharges via USB-C when needed, typically every 1-3 days depending on use. When the flavour fades or vapour weakens, the pod is empty: remove and replace with a fresh one. Some higher-capacity kits also include a refill container that needs to be replaced after several pod swaps.

Why prefilled pod systems replaced disposables

Three reasons. First, regulatory: the UK 1 June 2025 ban required vapes to be both rechargeable and refillable (via replaceable pods). Disposables failed both conditions. Prefilled pod kits comply with both. Second, environmental: a single device body reused over hundreds of charges replaces what would have been hundreds of single-use disposables. Material Focus estimated over 8 million disposables were thrown away weekly in the UK by January 2025. Prefilled pod kits dramatically reduce that volume. Third, cost: per puff, prefilled pod kits are typically much cheaper than the disposables they replaced because the reusable device body amortises across many pod swaps.
