Vape explosions: the lithium-ion reality
Vapes can explode in rare cases. The cause is almost always the lithium-ion battery inside the device, never the e-liquid itself. Lithium-ion batteries (the same type used in mobile phones, laptops and electric scooters) store a lot of energy in a compact space, which is what makes them efficient power sources. The trade-off is that if the battery is damaged, overheated, overcharged or short-circuited, it can enter thermal runaway: a chain reaction of rapid self-heating that ends in flame projection, release of flammable electrolyte, and sometimes audible explosion.
For UK vapers using TPD-compliant prefilled pod kits and refillable kits from reputable brands, the risk in normal use is extremely low. UK kits must meet the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations (TRPR) battery safety requirements, with overcharge protection, short-circuit protection and quality-controlled cells. The US Fire Administration has described vape battery failures as behaving like “flaming rockets” because the cylindrical battery shape and tight casing can project flames directionally when the casing ruptures. A 2024 Material Focus report described the rapid rise in UK refuse worker injuries from vape batteries being crushed in bin lorries, with one Walsall recycling facility forced offline for 6 months by a vape-battery-triggered fire that caused millions in damage. The point: explosions are rare in user-facing terms but real, and the disposal hazard affects everyone.
The four main causes of vape battery failure
Cause 1: Overcharging. Leaving a device on charge overnight, particularly with no overcharge protection, allows the battery to heat continuously. Modern kits have safety circuits that cut off at full charge, but cheap counterfeits often do not. Cause 2: Wrong charger. Fast chargers, car chargers and laptop USB-C ports can deliver more current than vape batteries are designed for. Always use a standard 5V 1A USB plug. Cause 3: Physical damage. Dropping a vape, sitting on it, or crushing it can puncture the battery casing internally. Damage is often invisible from the outside. Cause 4: Heat exposure. Leaving a vape in a hot car (above 60°C), in direct sunlight or near a heat source can trigger thermal runaway.
The UK disposal crisis and why it matters
The 1 June 2025 UK disposable vape ban was driven partly by the fire safety crisis: improperly disposed single-use vapes were causing battery fires at a rate that increased 71% in two years. Material Focus data shows 8.2 million disposable, pod and big-puff vapes are still being wrongly disposed each week in the UK as of late 2025. Biffa, the UK’s largest waste management company, sees an average of 7000 vapes per day entering its recycling and waste centres, many improperly disposed. More than 180 fires have erupted across Biffa’s UK estate since June 2025 alone. The lithium-ion batteries inside are crushed by bin lorries and rupture, sometimes called “zombie batteries” because they ignite in the waste stream long after disposal.
Why TPD-compliant UK kits are safer than counterfeits
TPD compliance includes battery safety requirements: overcharge protection, short-circuit protection, certified-quality lithium-ion cells and required safety labelling. Reputable UK brands like Elf Bar, Lost Mary, SKE Crystal, IVG, Hayati and Vaporesso build to these specifications and the failure rate is extremely low. Counterfeit and grey-market vapes (typically sold by unregistered online sellers at suspiciously low prices) often skip these safeguards: counterfeit batteries with inadequate cells, missing overcharge protection circuits, and quality control that allows defective devices into the market. The US Fire Administration found that 31% of vape incidents in their data occurred in users’ pockets, often from cheap counterfeit devices.

Cracked casing, leaking liquid, swelling, unusual smell or heat are all warning signs. Stop using and recycle the device.
Recycle properly when finished
