How Nicotine Salts Help Ex-Smokers Make the Switch
A clear UK 2026 cessation guide rooted in peer-reviewed evidence and a decade of in-store experience helping smokers move to vaping at our Omagh and Strabane stores.
Nic salts hit the bloodstream fast enough to feel like a cigarette, and that is why ex-smokers switch successfully on them where freebase often fails.
Faster nicotine delivery. Smoother throat hit at 20mg. MTL pod kit draw mimics a cigarette. Buy genuine UK TPD-compliant bottles.

Why nic salts work for switching where freebase often fails
The headline finding from the most cited UK and US switching trials is consistent: smokers who switch to nicotine salt pod systems show large drops in cigarette dependence, cravings and withdrawal within six weeks, and they maintain their blood nicotine levels in the process. In a six-week trial, exclusive switchers recorded a roughly 32 point reduction in cigarette dependence on a standardised scale and smoked around 11 fewer cigarettes per day. Even dual users who continued to smoke some cigarettes alongside vaping reported a 9 cigarette per day reduction and an 18 point drop in dependence.
The reason comes down to chemistry. Nicotine salts are made by combining nicotine with a mild organic acid, which keeps the nicotine in a form the bloodstream absorbs more like a cigarette. With freebase e-liquid the peak takes 10 to 15 minutes. With nic salts it is closer to 3 to 5. That window matters because cigarette cravings are short and sharp, and a delivery system that catches them in the first few minutes lines up far better with how cigarette dependence actually feels.
The second reason is the throat. At 20mg/ml, freebase nicotine is harsh and most ex-smokers cough on the first puff. At the same 20mg/ml a nic salt is smooth, because the acid lowers the pH and softens the hit. That single difference is enough to keep many switchers off cigarettes for the critical first two weeks, where freebase pushes them back.
What the NHS and UK regulators say
The NHS recommends vaping only for adult smokers as a way to move away from cigarettes, and considers vaping substantially less harmful than smoking. The Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (which absorbed the work previously done by Public Health England) puts the figure at around 95% less harmful. Vaping is not risk-free, particularly for non-smokers and people under 18, but for an adult smoker who would otherwise carry on smoking it is the cessation tool with the strongest UK endorsement.
What a JUST SALTS switching kit looks like
A typical successful UK switch uses a 1.0 ohm or higher MTL (mouth-to-lung) pod kit running at around 10 to 15W, paired with 20mg/ml nicotine salt e-liquid in a flavour the user actually enjoys. That setup mimics the draw of a cigarette closely enough that most adults can swap straight across without a learning curve, which is exactly the goal at this stage.
Fast nicotine delivery
Nic salts peak in the bloodstream in 3 to 5 minutes versus 10 to 15 for freebase. That is the window cigarette cravings live in.
Smooth at 20mg
The acid in nic salts lowers the pH, so a high-strength 20mg JUST SALTS is smooth where 20mg freebase would be harsh.
Adult smokers only
Nicotine is addictive. JUST SALTS is intended for adult smokers and ex-smokers, never for non-smokers or under 18s.
Pair with the right kit
20mg nic salt in a sub-ohm direct-to-lung tank delivers too much nicotine. Use a 1.0 ohm or higher MTL pod kit.
The 4 stages of a successful switch
Most ex-smokers who switch successfully follow the same broad pattern. Knowing what to expect at each stage is one of the strongest predictors of getting through the first month without relapsing. This is the pattern we see most often in store at Omagh and Strabane.
Days 1 to 3: peak withdrawal
Physical cravings are at their strongest in the first 48 to 72 hours. A 20mg JUST SALTS in a 1.0 ohm MTL pod kit is your primary tool. Vape on demand the way you would smoke on demand.
Days 4 to 14: cravings drop
Cravings ease noticeably from day 4. Many dual use during this stage, smoking fewer cigarettes alongside vaping. The data shows even partial switching cuts cigarettes per day by roughly 9.
Weeks 2 to 4: new daily habit
The behaviour replacement work happens here. Cigarette break becomes vape break, hand-to-mouth ritual transfers across. By the end of week 4 most successful switchers are exclusive vapers.
Month 1 onwards: maintenance
From month one onwards the switch is usually stable. After three to six months of comfortable 20mg use, many step down to 10mg JUST SALTS. Some eventually step off nicotine altogether.
The biggest single mistake we see at the counter is people choosing too low a starting strength. A 20-a-day smoker on 10mg/ml freebase will chain-vape, never feel satisfied and usually pick up cigarettes again within a week. The right starting point for a heavy smoker is 20mg JUST SALTS in an MTL pod kit. Once the switch is stable, stepping down is straightforward. Our guide to 10mg vs 20mg JUST SALTS walks through the choice in detail, and the Just Vape team in Omagh and Strabane will help you confirm the right starting strength in person.
