The detail

A decade of vaping in Omagh

When Just Vape opened on Foundry Lane in February 2015, the UK vape market looked completely different. NI smoking rates were sitting at 18% to 20%, the TPD regulations that now cap nicotine e-liquid at 10ml had not yet come into force, and disposable vapes had not been invented in their modern form. The market was dominated by box mods, sub-ohm tanks and 18mg freebase e-liquid in tiny bottles.

The first wave of Omagh customers were almost all smokers looking for a way out of cigarettes. The advice in store was relatively simple: pick a starter kit, pick a flavour you actually like, start at 18mg freebase and work down. Most successful switchers in that era stayed on freebase for years. The success rate was meaningful but the learning curve was steep, particularly for older smokers who had never used technology like this before.

The TPD shift (May 2017)

The UK Tobacco Products Directive came into force in 2017 and reshaped the market overnight. Nicotine e-liquid was capped at 10ml per bottle, tanks were capped at 2ml, nicotine strength was capped at 20mg/ml. The 100ml shortfill format was invented as a TPD workaround, and Just Vape Omagh adapted its stocking and in-store advice accordingly. The shortfill format has been part of the daily conversation at the counter ever since.

The nic salt era (2018 onwards)

By 2018, nicotine salt e-liquid had arrived in the UK and Omagh customers started to ask about it. Nic salts at 20mg gave smokers a smoother way to match their cigarette intake, and the switching success rate jumped noticeably. Our ex-smoker switching guide covers the science behind why salts work better than freebase for cigarette replacement.

The disposable wave (2021 to 2025)

From around 2021 the disposable vape took over the UK market. Single-use Elf Bars, Lost Marys and Crystal Bars became the everyday vape, and the Omagh store stocked them alongside the refillable range. By 2024 the NI Audit Office reported that over 80% of NI vapers were using single-use rather than refillable devices, with public health concerns about youth uptake and environmental waste mounting fast.

The post-ban shift (June 2025 onwards)

The 1 June 2025 UK disposable ban changed the market again. Omagh customers who had been on disposables since 2021 came back to the store looking for advice on refillable pod kits and bottled nic salts. The 2025 to 2026 wave of in-store conversations has largely been about matching disposable flavours to bar-style nic salts and picking the right pod kit. Our post-disposable-ban guide covers the wider context.

EXPERIENCE

Through every UK market shift

Pre-TPD, post-TPD, the nic salt arrival, the disposable wave, the 2025 ban. The team has guided customers through all of it.

CONTEXT

NI still has ~320k smokers

Smoking rates have dropped sharply but the Public Health Agency estimates 320,000 NI adults still smoke. The job is not done.

CONTEXT

1 October 2026 brings the vape duty

UK Vaping Products Duty of £2.20 per 10ml plus VAT applies from October 2026. Prices will rise but the cost gap vs cigarettes remains huge.

The 4 customer waves

The four kinds of Omagh customer Just Vape has served

Over a decade the customer base has changed shape four times. Each wave needed a different conversation at the counter.

1

2015 to 2017: The early adopter smoker

Adult smokers looking for an alternative. Box mods, sub-ohm tanks, 18mg freebase. The advice was simple but the kit was complicated.

2

2017 to 2021: The MTL pod kit user

Post-TPD, the conversation moved to pod kits and nic salts. Switching rates improved noticeably. Most of the long-term customers came on board in this period.

3

2021 to 2025: The disposable user

Younger adults moving across from cigarettes, plus a wave of new vape users picking up Elf Bars and Crystal Bars from convenience stores. Quick conversations, low-touch transactions.

4

June 2025 onwards: The post-ban switcher

Ex-disposable users picking up refillable pod kits for the first time. The current wave. Most need flavour matching, kit advice and nic shot guidance.

The fact that Just Vape Omagh has been through all four waves is the reason the in-store advice now carries weight. Whatever stage you are at in your own switching journey, the team has helped someone in a similar position before. Drop in on Foundry Lane, or call 028 8226 7207 to ask a question before you visit.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long has Just Vape been in Omagh?
Just Vape Omagh opened in February 2015 on Foundry Lane. The store has been helping local smokers move to vaping for over a decade, and is one of the longest-running independent vape shops in County Tyrone.
What are the smoking and vaping rates in Northern Ireland?
Around 14% of adults in Northern Ireland currently smoke, down from 24% in 2010-11. Adult vaping has roughly doubled in the same period, from 5% to around 9%. Roughly 320,000 NI adults still smoke, and the Public Health Agency estimates smoking costs the NI economy around £450 million a year.
How does Just Vape Omagh support local smokers wanting to quit?
In-store consultation on starting strength, pod kit choice and flavour matching, plus follow-up support when customers come back to reorder. The team has been doing this since 2015 so the advice is grounded in over a decade of in-person experience with local smokers.
How did the June 2025 disposable ban affect Omagh vapers?
The same way as the rest of the UK. Local disposable users moved to refillable pod kits paired with bottled nic salts in the months around June 2025. The store helped customers transition by matching their disposable flavour profile to a 10ml or 100ml bottled equivalent.
Where is Just Vape Omagh located?
On Foundry Lane in Omagh, County Tyrone. Phone 028 8226 7207. The store is open six days a week and stocks the full Just Vape range plus support hardware and accessories.
Why pick a local Omagh vape shop over an online retailer?
In-person advice on which kit and strength suits you, the ability to handle products before buying, and a relationship with a local team who will troubleshoot for you if something does not work. Online imports also carry risks around TPD compliance that a local UK shop does not.
